Unlocking Creativity 3: Awareness vs. Attention

We often attribute the building of body awareness to somatic study (Alexander Technique and Body Mapping). The truth is that you already are aware because you are alive. Your awareness is a product of your nervous system.

The receptors of your senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell, kinesthesia, proprioception, balance) are always on, receiving information continuously and sending it to your brain.

Alexander Technique and Body Mapping provide you the opportunity to pause and bring forward the data that is already there and interpret it in a useful way. These somatic practices provide the structure for cultivating your attention to the awareness that you already have.

All you have to do is ask yourself: “What do I notice as I am doing …” and wait for the information to come forward. Be sure that as you wait, you don’t hold still. Continue to exist, breathe, and keep going as the information comes into your field of attention.

This is integrating attention!
