Unlocking Creativity 5: Groundedness

Groundedness is a topic that comes up often when working with musicians who are interested in deepening their connection to their bodies. When I hear that word, I immediately start asking questions.

What does this word mean to you? How do you know you are grounded? What do you do to be grounded?

The term itself comes from meditative practices that are designed to cultivate and move energy in and throughout the body. It has been taken from these practices and become more mainstream in its use. Sadly, its meaning was not brought with it.

We are born into and exist in a sea of energy. It is all around us. Light, radio waves, heat, electromagnetic energy from the sun and the earth - it’s all around us all the time. Our bodies generate it as well. We are born connected to it and stay connected to it unless we do something that closes those connections.

We close those connects through the ways that we think about our bodies and the beliefs that we have about our bodies and the world around us.

Despite our consciousness being closed to these connections, the pathways to the energy remain. Our legs and feet are always connected to us. The pores of our skin are always there. We simply need to remind our attention of their importance.

So, take a moment now and remind yourself that either through your legs or through your sit bones, you are connected to the planet. Invite the support from the ground up through our body. Allow the pores of your skin to open and “breathe” in the energy of the world around you. The longer that you pause and stay with that intention, the deeper your sense of the experience of being grounded will develop.
